The Dome of Christ the Pantocrator

Previous | Home | Next

Pantocrator is the name of the fresco decorating in the center of the top dome. It depicts Christ as the almighty God and Lord of the Universe. All Orthodox Churches have one dome representing Christ or God as the head of the church. An icon is not something we worship, but rather view as "windows into heaven". This means that we see lessons or things that God wants for us to see. Icon means image. In Orthodox Christian teaching, we are all images or icons of Christ. The iconic image of Christ Pantocrator ("Christ, Ruler of All") was one of the first images of Christ developed in the Early Christian Church and remains a central icon of the Eastern Orthodox Church
